Burnham takes home 1st for Catoosa at Texas Outlaw

A handful of Oklahoma teams made the trek south on I-35 to head to Allen last weekend for the Texas Outlaw Tournament.

Three teams had top-10 finishes in a field of nearly 40 teams, while Mason Burnham won a championship on Saturday.

Burnham, a Class 4A champion at 113 last year, took home first in the 106-pound bracket to wrap up the two-day event with a 7-0 win over Gianni Diaz from Allen, Texas.

Coming back from a broken thumb, Burnham went 6-0 at the event. He had pins in four of the matches and added a tech fall, 23-5, as well. He needed a little more than 2 1/2 minutes to win his quarterfinals and semifinal matches by pins.

Teammate Tranel Love, a returning all-stater, was fourth for Catoosa at 285 pounds. He posted four wins in a row to open before losing his last two matches by a combined two points. 

The Indians took eight overall with 294 1/2 points. 

Carl Albert was the top team from Oklahoma in the standings with 333 points. The Midwest City school 

The Titans had three in the finals but all three lost to Texas foes in the last match.

Cash Wiley (120 pounds) suffered only his second loss of the season with a 12-4 major decision loss to Allen’s Izayiah Chavez in the finals. Wiley posted five wins with two wins vs. Texas foes, then one against Oklahoma, Louisana and Alabama. 

Kingston Sikes (165) suffered his first loss of the year by getting pinned by Allen’s Carter Kekvapil in the title match. Sikes (26-1) had two pins and outscored opponents 74-8 by tech falls. 

Cruz Young (285) was the third Titan to reach the finals, falling to Shane Trotter of Katy in the final by a pin. Young beat Love in the semifinals, 5-4 in a UTB, to make the finals.

The other medalist for Carl Albert was Brayden Mixay, who was sixth at 138. He posted a 6-2 mark with a trio of tech fall wins. 

Blanchard tied for sixth with 325 points and had two finalists.

Tyler Misenheimer and Gavin Rich were runners-up for the Lions.

Misenhemier (126) lost for the first time this year when he fell to Allen’s Kelby Bernard by a pin in the finals. A defending state champion, Misenheimer is now 15-1 on the year. He won six matches at this tournament, including two pins in less than a minute. 

Rich (215) won five straight matches to reach the finals behind five pins. He lost by a tech fall to Danon Walker of Bossier City (La.) Airline.

At 285 pounds, Christian Young was the third Oklahoma wrestler to place in the weight class. He lost his fifth-place match to Odin Hensley of Austin (Tex.) Lake Travis.  

Moore had one medalist in the event with Aiden Cox (165) taking fifth place. Moore went 6-2 and won his final four matches. 

Moore was 26th overall and Tecumseh took 32nd place.
